Forum demands change in Panama governance

What needs to change in Panama is the way decisions are made said civic organizations at a Friday (February 26) forum sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
They called on President Ricardo Martinelli to better adhere to international principles of good governance and stay away from the  advisors of former President George W. Bush.
"It is time that citizens say that this (needs to change)," said Roberto Eisenmann, of the Foundation for the Development of Citizen’s Freedom.
Eisenmann said that Martinelli has failed to adhere to requirements in the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and the handling of the suspension of Attorney General Ana Matilde Gómez.
The groups demanded that President, Ricardo Martinelli, call a halt to making decisions that affect the country’s institutional quality, a condition essential to the economic and social development.
"It is time for citizens to say: do not play with the institutions," said I. Roberto Eisenmann, of the Foundation for the Development of Citizen Liberty.
Eisenmann said Martinelli has made rough blows to the institutions with his performances on the issue of appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and the appointment of the Attorney General.
He recommended the government stay away from the advisors of former U.S. President George W. Bush.

Theproposals were made during a forum held yesterday in the Chamber of Commerce, where the economist Martin Krause, the creator of the Institutional Quality Index (ICI) was the keynote speaker.

He was supported by Luis H. Moreno President of the Foundation of Ethics and Civics, who said tha Martinelli made errors with the suspension of Attorney General and the appointment of judges..
