Haitian soccer team shirts as fundraisers at student conference
Two jerseys from the Haitian National Football (soccer) team have been donated by team sponsor Digicel Corp. as fundraising auction items for Fridays’s (May 7) United For Haiti, hemispheric conference.
The event.organized by students of the University of Louisville,Panama will be at the Hotel Veneto.
"We asked our folks in Port-au-Prince to send some flags or signs to display at the conference," said Digicel Vice Chairman Luis LaRocca. “When I opened the air freight packet from Haiti included were one home and one away Jersey which our staff thought would make a great fundraising item."
The jerseys will be part of a silent auction at the conference which will be opened with a special greeting from the Haitian ambassador in Panama, and kick off resolutions and debate on Haiti reconstruction by student delegates representing 16 hemispheric nations and non-governmental agencies.
Admission is free but the students are asking for voluntary donations funds for Haiti relief.
U.S. Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida, whose district includes many Haitian-Americans who mobilized to help friends and family after the January earthquake which killed more than 200,000 people said in a message to the students that we was "extremely proud that the young people have taken the lead to keep world focus on humanitarian needs."
The conference will be broadcast on the worldwide web by Walkabout ipTV of Panama and Australia and can be viewed at http://www.walkaboutiptv.com/
