Poor women given government food bags to stage demonstration Vice-President
Panama’s Vice President, Juan Carlos Varela, demanded an explanation from the Martinelli government about women who were “tricked” into staging a demonstration in front of the Panamenista headquarters.
Dozens of women gathered on Avenida Peru calling for Varela, who heads the Panemenista Party to resign."What happened yesterday was a very serious offense, "said Varela. "The consequences cannot be measured." Varela questioned the fact that a group of women were mobilized with alleged false promises
"The president and chairman of the Democratic Change Party ( CD), Ricardo Martinelli, owes the country an explanation about what happened yesterday, when humble women, even from inland villages, were deceived and brought to the city with promises of economic aid and delivery of food bags, and then coerced into a political protest at the headquarters of our party," said a Panamenista Party statement.
In a press conference at Varela said: "this type of event was staged during the military dictatorship. If public funds were used for bags of food to mobilize the group of women who came to the party headquarters, then you can say that it was a "provocative act. The party leadership will decide if the case will eventually lead to the prosecutor to investigate the facts.
Varela also announced that today was named the "Front of the truth", to work for the struggle for democracy, values, institutions and transparency.
Thefront is composed of Ramon Fonseca Mora, José I.Blandon, Zulema Sucre de Vega, Adolfo "Beby" Valderrama, Nadgee Bonilla Castillo, Luis Ernesto Carles and Luis Eduardo Quirós. The front willto respond "to baseless attacks by the Martinelli government against my person and the country."
