Panama listed as #1 must-see destination
The naming of Panama in an article for The New York Times (NYT) as the number one choice for a list of 45 places to visit this year, has the tourism sector pouring verbal champagne.
But behind the euphoria comes the recognition that the designation represents a challenge to be faced..
Jaime Campuzano, president of the National Tourism Council, said it is a privilege that a newspaper like the NYT Panama distinguishes Panma this way, over many more destinations with a tourism tradition.
But he added that the designation is also a challenge because: "The country must continue to develop new products to offer to visitors and, it obliges us to improve the tourism infrastructure, mainly in the interior. We must also complete the certification process that will improve the quality of services offered in the country. "
Armando Rodriguez, president of the Association of Small Hotels, said the news helps the country to position itself.
He stressed that Panama is improving its offer as insurance programs for visitors and marketing strategy has borne fruit. "In the capital city large international hotel chains helpd to attract more tourists to the country from developed markets,” he said.
However, despite the growth, the lack of airline seats and high airline prices have become major obstacles for tourism in Panama, he said.
Salomon Shamah, manager of Panama’s Tourism Authority said the recognition was the result of state policy implemented by the last three governments. "The experience of tourists in the country is positive. The visitors feel safe and free."
“We have increased our presence in social networks and along with participation in international fairs. and agreements we have signed with more than 20 tourism wholesalers in major markets worldwide have all played contributed to the arrival of more tourists.
German Pilar, a founding member of the BioMuseo -mentioned by the NYT as one of the future attractions of the country,- said that when ready BioMuseo would be a perfect complement to enhance the experience of tourists.
Pilar Calderon, director of the Colombian magazine Diners, whose latest edition was dedicated to Panama, said the distinction is a great opportunity for the country.
He added that, although Panama has become more sophisticated and has significantly increased the hotels and restaurants, it still lacks much in terms of infrastructure and services. Panama’s beach scenes, mountain and jungle can be world-class destinations.
