2-months of talks but no consensus on traffic chaos
After two months of meetings of a high level committee formed to try to cope with Panama’s traffic woes, no consensus has been reached.
The key members of the committee are the Transit Authority (ATTT) and the Public Works Ministry (MOP), backed by business associations. They have been discussing measures to to ease traffic jams in the capital with a target date of Monday February 27 when the school year begins.
The committee began meeting in December to try to avoid chaos with construction of the Metro and 23 MOP road projects at the same time.
Chamber of Commerce VP, Irvin A. Halman, admitted that the authorities involved in this committee have not reached a consensus, some measures that have been approved will be announced in early March.
The chamber has requested that implementation becomes effective three months later, to give companies a chance to adjust.
With the price of gasoline set to continue its upward climb this weekend, idling in traffic jams is going to be an expensive pastime.
