Illegal logging destroying indigenous habitat
Another group of indigenous people is raising its voice in protest over abuses to the environment, because of illegal logging.
After a meeting lasting over two hours with Lucia Chandeck the general manager of the National Environmental Authority (ANAM) a group of Wounnan decided to continue their day of protest, in an attempt to control the illegal logging of timber species in the province of Darien.
Leonidas Quiros, legal adviser to the National People's Congress Wounnan, said the Wounnan have also scheduled a vigil at either the premises of Anam or the National Authority of Land Management.
Quiros said that Chandeck heard the complaints and said the problem would be solved, but provided no document with commitments, and did not give a date for starting operations to stop the loggers.
The Wounnan fear that illegal loggers are destroying the forests where they live in Darien.
The protestors at the demonstration come from the communities of Rio Hondo, Maje and atanares, whose lands are in the process of being declared as collective lands.
The leader said that the illegal timber extraction is also hurting Wounnan communities located outside the region. La Prensa was unable to get a comment from Anam.
