Park administrator acquitted in case of disappearing sculptures
The ex-administrator of the park where 42 bronze figures valued at $250,000, were stolen and melted down, has been acquitted of charges involving their disappearance.
The sculptures, Games of Yesteryear were under the care of Mingthoy Giro, in Parque Omar.
The decision to acquit former TV presenter Giro and seven others on charges of embezzlement was made by JudgeJohann Barrios.
The ruling that benefited the former director of the Special Projects Office of the First Lady during the administration of Martin Torrijos (2004-2009), states that the office fulfilled its function: received and guarded figures of 20 children, 22 birds and a comet. Moreover, the judge said, the keys of the place where the pieces were stored were guarded.
Barrios said in his ruling that while the defendant Giro at that time was the manager of Parque Omar, these functions did not involve her personally but instead, she kept his command staff "which inevitably must delegate tasks. "
The judge's decision ordering the lifting of the precautionary measures against Giro and the other seven defendants: DomingoVarela, Jaime Tapia Salgado, Hector del Cid, Maximum Moró Moreno, Rolando Vasquez, Eric Murillo and Marcos Rodríguez Aparicio.
But the second anti-corruption prosecutor, Lizzette Chevalier, who led the process, told La Prensa that she would appeal the decision of the Second Court.
Giro said was wrongly accused for an alleged administrative violation."I was pursued, searched, and my name and reputation were trampled. Starting today begins a new stage in my life, so I will try to turn the page, and the divine justice will take care of those who hurt me."
