Colon talks producing no results local leader
The government is discovering that the Colon protest movement that was fired by a move to sell of land in the Frez Zone is a hard nut to crack.
Demonstrators were back on rthe streets on Tuesday evening as talks intended to address the concerns of a community that feels it has long been overlooked stalled.
President Ricardo Martinelli has failed to deliver promised improvements to Colón, says Broad Front for Colón (FAC) leader Felipe Cabeza.
Complaining of lack of progress stalled dialogue meetings he said Martinelli pledged that Colón would quickly see better days, but this has failed.
Cabeza said that the authorities also committed themselves to lowering the high cost of living and solving housing problems, which has not happened. "We remain concerned because the government does not want to solve these problems, and has manipulated the dialogue.”
The meetings were set up after protests in Colon led to the deaths of three people, including a nine year old, who were killed by security forces.
He said that the government has manipulated the dialogue on Colón, which has prompted them to call for protests today.
Minister of the Presidency Roberto Henrí¬quez said Monday that a number of projects have been slated for Colón, and that the government was looking at changing the methodology of the dialogue to make it more effective.
