Cooler Assembly passes new recall bill
The day after a raucous debate in the National Assembly, with shouting, pushing and near fisticuffs, the ruling CD party gave its approval to an amended recall bill.
The bill makes it easier for political parties to apply the recall.
During the third readingb debate, legislators from the CD presented several modifications to the project, known as the 'antitránsfuga law'.
One of these reforms means the act will take effect from July 1, 2014, after the next election and not since its enactment, as was the original plan. The new date will prevent the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) and the Panamista Party from beginning recall processes process against the deputies they list as defectors.
Many legislators jumped ship after the last election, encouraged in many cases by blandishment’s from the ruling party.
