Panama Canal nominated for international award
THE PANAMA CANAL has been nominated for the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award in the area of international cooperation.
Administrator Jorge Quijano made the announcement on Wednesday May 1 saying that the nomination is "something that all Panamanians can be proud of."
The Prince of Asturias Awards are given annually by the foundation of the same name to promote scientific, cultural and humanistic values in eight categories: arts, communication and humanities, social sciences, letters, sports, scientific and technical research and international cooperation.
The Panama Canal was nominated by Spanish Ambassador Jesús Silva. He said that the decision was made in recognition of its service to the maritime industry, international trade and its contribution as a symbol of peaceful understanding among nations.
The awards will be presented in October.
