Fabrega to carry PRD banner in mayoralty race

DEPUTY José Luis Fábrega has been named the unofficial winner of the PRD primary to be the party's candidate for the mayor of Panama City.

Fábrega, whose signs have blanketed the city for weeks received 60 percent of the votes, defeating his primary challenger, former presidential candidate and minister, Balbina Herrera who had a below the horizon campaign, had 37.5 percent.

Luis Guerra, president of the PRD National Elections Commission, announced that participation in the primary reached 55 percent, much higher than expected and far in excess of the turnout in the CD presidential primary.
Late Sunday it was reported that for deputy races, tabulators hadcounted 821 ballot boxes and have 537 to go. For mayoralty races, the officials had counted 296 ballot boxes with 1,090 to go, while for councilors there have been 180 ballot boxes counted with 1,301 to go.
