Government tapping phones, emails – PRD
ALLEGATIONS that the government is intercepting cell phone calls and electronic communications of citizens surfaced on Tuesday June 4.
"The government is responsible for the recordings and illegal interventions in the electronic mail and phones of journalists, officials and politicians in a clear violation of the constitution and the law," said PRD official Javier Martinez Acha.
He said that it is clear that the government is "the only one who can intervene in telephone calls and e-mails" since they have the equipment to was given to Panama to fight crime. Instead, this equipment is being used for political espionage.
The statements are in response to the broadcast of a recording of a conversation between Martiniez Acha and PRD presidential candidate Juan Carlos Navarro talking about a recent fundraising dinner.
"We want to make it clear that we are not going to pursue these practices when the PRD governs in July 2014," he said.
At the same time, Acha Martinez called for unions, businessmen, journalists and opposition parties to make a "common front" to fight for fundamental rights in Panama.
