Metro Subway and Buses wont solve traffic problems ATTT
DAYS after President Ricardo Martinelli claimed that the opening of Panama’s first subway would ease traffic flow in the city the Transit Authority gave a different opinion..
Nicolas Brea secretary of the Authority (ATTT), said Monday, August 12 that the Metro Subway and Buses are not enough and and “a comprehensive response is needed”.
He said that urban mobility in the capital, will become "unsustainable" due to the ever growing number of vehicles on the road.
Brea pointed out that approximately 50,000 new cars arrive on the main streets and avenues of the country every year.
Skeptics claim that Martinelli’s prediction that the subway will ease traffic flow is flawed as the owners of vehicles, many of whom see them as status symbols , will not be using the subway.
Entrepreneurs and other organized groups are calling on authorities should pay attention to the problem and take steps to expedite traffic.
Over a year of meetings between business representatives, government and transit authorities failed to produce any enforceable changes.
Promises to put more traffic police on the streets do not appear to have been fulfilled and illegal parking continues to reduce many city roads to single lane traffic.
