New Transparency boss has civil rights record

LONGTIME CIVIL RIGHTS activist and spokesperson Angélica Maytín, is the new director of the National Authority on Transparency and Access to Information (Antai), replacing Martinelli appointment, Abigaí¬l Benzadón.

President Juan Carlos Varela announced the appointment on Tuesday November 11, at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
“Combating corruption is task for all,” said Maytín, who for 18 years was the executive director of the Foundation for the Development of Citizen Freedom. She said her experience will be invaluable in her new position.
She pledged to update the country with all the obligations in the field of international anti-corruption conventions, which for many years was in arrears. Similarly, she announced that she will work with the media and civil society reports La Prensa.
Varela said Antai is the main entity for the formulation of public policies to enforce national and international regulations against corruption, transparency, ethics and access to information.
“Our administration received a government of institutions weakened by corruption, cronyism and abuse of the resources of the state motivated by economic interests,” said Varela..
He said his government is prepared to start the corresponding administrative and judicial processes to defend the interests of the nation. According to the president, those who are responsible for economic injury to the state will be held accountable to justice.
