Conference will decide fate of indigenous leader

A THREE DAY General Conferece  of Ngäbe-Buglé traditional authorities will decide the political future of   Chief Silvia Carrera this coming weekend.

Invitations to a general conference have been distributed to both local and regional delegates, said José Santos, organizer of the meeting.

“The alleged dismissal of the chief has brought confusion among the people,” he said. “We call upon all leaders of the region to attend the meeting.”

It will take place in Hato Chami, Nedrini, starting Friday, November 21.

At the end of October,  Ngäbe-Buglé General Assembly President Edilberto Sánchez announced that a group of traditional leaders had voted to remove Carrera from office for alleged excess of functions and for not presenting annual status reports reports La Prensa

But delegate Concepcion Alberto Southpaw said the move violated established procedures, and that the general congress must vote on the issue.

Carrera was elected on Sept. 11, 2011. Her term extends to 2017.
