Recovered corruption money for social projects

WHILE former president Ricardo Martinelli tweets that the present government is moving too slowly, his successor Juan Carlos Varela was quick to announce that money clawed back from flawed contracts, illegal concessions and corrupt practices during the Martinelli era will be used to create a social fund to benefit all Panamanians.

According to the President, his administration has already recovered contracts that had been given in the Martinelli administration as in the case of the Tocumen International Airport.
He argued that the money should go to various social projects like providing more housing.
“We do not hate anyone … what I hate is that if state funds are stolen” he said during a tour of Las Garzas Pacora on Tuesday, November 18
He also called for “the certainty of punishment” applied to those investigated for corruption.
Earlier in the day, the former director of the National Assistance Program (PAN), Rafael Guardia Jaen was arrested and is under preventative detention for alleged corruption and the commission of crimes against the public administration.
To date, the First Anticorruption Prosecutor has frozen $9 million and part of these funds are from limited liability companies linked to Guardia.
