PRD DEPUTY Rubén De León is the new president of Panama’s National Assembly. He was elected on Wednesday, July 1 after bitter internal squabbles in the PRD. With some of the group supporting him called ”traitors” by supporters of the candidate nominated by the party hierarchy.
De León defeated fellow PRD member Crispiano Adames 39-31. Adames was supported by the PRD leadership and some members of the CD, who were poised to seize control of key leadership positions within the Assembly.
But De León won the support of the Panameñista party and a section of the PRD.
The victory will likely benefit President Juan Carlos Varela, who could see his political agenda supported by the assembly opines La Prensa.
