Varela accepts resignation of scandal inked sports boss
The resignation of Panamanian Institute of Sports (Pandeportes) Secretary General Mónica Rodríguez de Silva has been accepted by President Juan Carlos Varela.
In her letter, Rodriguez de Silva did not give a reason for her decision. However, the resignation coincided with the publication in La Prensa of her links to a corruption investigation involving alleged cost overruns in the rental of helicopters by the previous government.
She has been linked to three of the four companies involved in the case.
The comptroller has estimated that the cost overruns resulted in the state losing some $10 million.
Rodriguez de Silva was hired to lead Pandeportes on July 2, 2014, two weeks after having renounced the presidency of Angels Wings Life Team Inc., one of the implicated companies.
Other relatives of the former official are also under investigation.
