Ratification of new judges moves to Assembly

THE RATIFICATION of Angela Russo and Cecilio Cedalise as Supreme Court judges has been approved by The Credentials Committee of the National Assembly.

The vote was unanimous except  for PRD Deputy Zulay Rodríguez who abstained from the vote approving Russo, whose husband she claims is related to President Juan Carlos Varela.

The two are candidates to fill positions on the court that will become vacant in January. The appointments will now be debated by the plenary of the assembly.

They were appointed by the Cabinet Council Dec. 10 after a period of public consultations.

According to Committee Chairman Jorge Ivan Arrocha, the plenary could begin discussing the appointments as early as Monday, which is also the day that the Supreme Court plenary gets to decide on petitions calling for an arrest warrant for former president Ricardo Martinelli.
