33 called to trial in Tonosi irrigation scandal

THIRTY THREE people have been called to face trial l for irregularities in the contract for the failed irrigation system in Tonosí that was awarded to the Ecuadorian company Hidalgo & Hidalgo (H&H).
Prosecutor Zuleyka Moore submitted a 117-volume case file on Jan. 5. It will be reviewed by 14th Criminal Judge Jose Angel Carrera.
The defendants include former ministers of Agricultural Development Oscar Osorio and Emilio Kieswetter, former Vice President Felipe Virzi, former CD deputy candidate Porfirio Ellis and H&H officials Marco Alban, Víctor Ríos and Juan Francisco Hurtado.
Other defendants include Ricardo Calvo, Gabriel Btesh and Abdiel Atencio, who are presumed to have fled the country.
More than $31 million was paid to H&H for the project, but no work was ever done. The company has failed to demonstrate how that money was used, reports La Prensa.
On Dec. 7, Judge Adolfo Mejia ordered the prosecution to conclude the investigation.
