ENVIRONMENT: 10,000 turtle eggs stolen in one month

OVER 10,000  turtle eggs were stolen from nests in Las Santos in the last month  and an  environmental group has has asked  the Environment Ministry to expand protection for sea turtles.

ProTortugas del Guánico Abajo, The environmental group, in a letter addressed to the ministry, pointed out that the area is vital for species that lay eggs in the area.

It is requesting permission to build a nursery on Guanico Beach with the purpose of turning it into an ecotourism center.

The environmental group Tortu-Agro also requested the ministry protect four beaches where turtles lay eggs.

The groups said that better surveillance is needed to protect the sea turtles. They are seeking patrols and the creation of police roadblocks to catch poachers.

Seven people have been convicted of poaching this year.

Turtle nesting takes place between August and December.
