More time allowed to investigate ex- supreme court judge

A 12-month extension to “perfect” the investigation summary of the former Supreme Court Justice Víctor Benavides has been granted  by the 15th Criminal Court to anti-corruption prosecutors.

Benavides is under investigation for the alleged commission of a crime against public administration, a complaint that was presented by the firm Vega & Álvarez.

In his decision the fifteenth judge, Leslie Loaiza said that the alleged crime under investigation is against the public administration and there are no detainees. In addition, there are pending proceedings that entail a “certain complexity and time.”

The case began when the Sixth Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office declared an investigation open in 2015 and carried out proceedings in order to corroborate the facts denounced by an ex-escort of the then magistrate in the period 2006 to 2010.

On June 19, 2015, Benavides resigned as a magistrate, a few days before the hearing of charges in the National Assembly for the alleged commission of crimes against public administration, money laundering and corruption of officials.

After that resignation, then deputy Jorge Alberto Rosas – acting as a prosecutor – sent the file to the Attorney General’s Office.
