New broom Minister after jailbreak scandal gone in less than two weeks
Less than two weeks after her controversial appointment as Minister of Government, Sheyla Grajales the former Governor of Panama resigned on Tuesday, February 18.
The reasons for her resignation are unknown, but last week she was the focus of media reports stemming from on-line revelations that she owed large sums of money in unpaid taxes to the General Directorate of Revenue (DGI)
Grajales, a prominent member of the Nationalist Republican Liberal Movement (Molirena), an ally of the official Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), took over the Ministry of Government on February 6, one day after President Laurentino Cortizo fired Carlos Romero from the portfolio, in the midst of a crisis in the security agencies following the jailbreak the multiple murderer Gilberto Ventura Ceballos, from La Nueva Joya prison.
The escape also forced the resignation of Security Minister, Rolando Mirones.
