Neighboring Colombia passes 1 million covid-19 cases

On Saturday, October 24 Colombia became the eighth country in the world to register over one million coronavirus .infections seven and a half months after the arrival of the pandemic in the country.

“The problem in Latin America was to think that this was resolved through medicalization, opening only intensive care beds and not establishing mechanisms for early detection and isolation in communities and territories,” Carolina Corcho the vice president of the Federation of Colombian Physician told Efe News agency.

In  Bogotá, the occupation of Intensive Care Units (ICU) with patients with coronavirus remains at 51.2%, while in Antioquia – the second most affected region-  the authorities declared this week a hospital red alert because on Saturday, October 24 the rate exceeded 80%.

This panorama will determine the conditions of a possible second wave of infections for which, according to Corcho, the institutions must not only increase the number of diagnostic tests that are processed daily but also must improve strategies such as epidemiological fences.
