Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announce new baby

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced on Sunday the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana in California after a year of turmoil in the British royal family.

“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen in honor of her late beloved grandmother, the Princess of Wales, ”says a statement from the couple.

The baby girl, the second daughter of the couple and eighth in the line of succession to the British throne, was born on Friday in Santa Barbara and is already at home.

The couple live near Los Angeles after resigning from their duties in the royal family early last year.

In March they gave an explosive interview on American television that unleashed the greatest crisis in the British royal family since the death of Harry’s mother in a car accident in Paris in 1997.

The two-hour interview was viewed by more than 11 million Americans and 17 million in the UK and in it Harry and Meghan said that racism was part of their decision to leave the country.

Meghan, a former actress, said she was “naively” prepared for life in the royal family and considered committing suicide when she was pregnant with her first child, Archie.

Harry, 36, and Megan, 39, accused newspapers of falling into racial stereotypes; especially compared to the coverage of Kate, Harry’s sister-in-law, who is white.
