Teachers announced 48-hour extendable strike

Classes will continue to be suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the teaching strike that was confirmed this Monday, October 23. Since Friday, October 20, when the National Assembly approved in its third debate Bill 1100, which approves the mining law contract between the State and the company Minera Panamá, SA, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals, and subsequently the President Laurentino Cortizo, sanctioned Law 406 that approves the mining concession contract, different organizations and groups have opposed the decision, among them, teaching unions.

In that sense, Fernando Ábrego, general secretary of the Association of Teachers of the Republic of Panama (Asoprof) reported that they declare a national strike of 48 hours that can be extended starting this Tuesday, October 24. On Wednesday, October 25, it will be decided whether the strike will be indefinite. At the moment, the teachers are on Via España road near the Church of Carmen, after marching towards the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), they will go to Plaza 5 de Mayo to continue with the protest actions.
