Three Arrested in Murder of Swiss-Spanish Businessman Miguel González.
Panamanian prosecutors arrested three suspects in the April murder of Swiss-Spanish financial executive Miguel González, nearly five months after the ambush-style shooting. González was a longtime foreign resident and financial executive who lived in Panama for over a decade with offices in Costa del Este — the kind of profile many expats and long-term residents share. The arrests show Panamanian authorities are actively pursuing violent crime cases involving foreign residents, but the ambush-style attack near a major highway access point is a reminder to stay alert to your surroundings, vary routines when possible, and avoid predictable routes, especially if you drive a higher-profile vehicle or handle noticeable wealth.
Panama’s Public Ministry announced that three people have been arrested in connection with the April 15 killing of Miguel González, a 60-year-old Swiss-Spanish financial executive, nearly five months after the attack. Operation “Destello,” led by the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Homicide and Femicide Section with support from judicial and police intelligence units, carried out raids in Pacora, Las Cumbres, and San Miguelito, where five people were detained across several separate investigations. Two men and one woman are suspected of direct involvement in González’s killing, prosecutors said. González was ambushed while driving a gray Kia Sportage in Llano Bonito, near an access point to the Corredor Sur highway.
According to early reports, the attackers traveled in a white sedan and wore vests resembling those used by judicial investigators. After boxing in his vehicle, they fired more than 15 rounds, striking González in the back, thigh, and hip; he died at Hospital San Miguel Arcángel shortly after. González co-founded Firmus Financial Inc., a Panama-based brokerage, and had more than three decades of experience in international banking, having studied in Geneva, Switzerland, and worked in the Bahamas before settling in Panama over a decade ago. He had no criminal record in Panama. The suspects have appeared before a guarantees court.
