Panama Government Halts Project to Charge ITBMS on Services and Products of the Digital Economy.

The government of José Raúl Mulino decided to halt, for now, the presentation to the National Assembly of the bill that would extend the application of the Transfer Tax on Movable Goods and Services (ITBMS) to services and products of the digital economy, after listening to the criticisms and questions that arose in recent days.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Felipe Chapman, confirmed this Monday, August 24, that the initiative will not be presented in the short term and assured that the Government is analyzing the opinions expressed by citizens about the proposal.  The minister emphasized that the project, which contemplated applying the tax to digital economy operations, including services and products contracted through digital platforms, had not yet been presented to the National Assembly, despite the fact that a broad debate about its content had been generated over the weekend.
