Truck Catches Fire and Tanker Explodes in Viguí Panama

Panama: The driver of a fuel tanker truck lost his life Sunday morning in a spectacular accident on the Inter-American Highway, near the town of Viguí, on the border between the provinces of Veraguas and Chiriquí. According to unofficial reports, residents of the area heard the loud screech of tires and, seconds later, a powerful explosion. Upon leaving their homes, they observed that the vehicle was engulfed in flames after crashing into the concrete barriers (jersey barrier) and falling into a ravine near the Viguí River.
The fire consumed a large part of the tanker, causing the death of the driver, who was trapped in the vehicle that went out of control into the precipice. Fire Department and National Police units were alerted to the emergency and went to the site to control the situation and begin investigations to determine the causes of the tragic accident. The victim’s identity is currently unknown while the investigation continues. The road has been closed in both directions to prevent any similar incidents.
