The Transformation of the Panamanian Pork Industry: From Surviving Imports to Seeking Export Markets
The growth in activity exceeds the pace of local consumption and forces the sector to seek commercial outlets outside national borders. After reaching record production levels, the Panamanian pork industry faces the challenge of finding new markets to sustain its growth and avoid accumulating surpluses.
The Panamanian pork industry faces a paradoxical situation. After more than a decade of adapting to international competition, investing in genetics, biosecurity, and productivity, the sector reached production levels that place it among the few countries in Latin America with the capacity to supply virtually its entire domestic market.

Official figures clearly reflect the phenomenon. Between January and April 2026, 236,964 pigs were slaughtered in Panama, an increase of 21.2% compared to the same period in 2025, when 195,533 animals were recorded.
