An Inter-American Telecommunications Event will be Hosted by Panama

Panama as an International Telecommunications Hub. The event will bring together OAS member states in Panama for the second time for five days to discuss telecommunications. From April 20 to 24, 2026, the 48th meeting of the Permanent Consultative Committee I: Telecommunications / Information and Communication Technologies (CCP.I-TIC) of the Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will be held in Panama.

The event, which brings together the member states of the OAS, will be held in the Panamanian capital for the second time for five days to discuss, cooperate and coordinate efforts in the development and standardization of Telecommunications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). During the meeting, representatives of regulatory bodies in the region, including the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP), as well as national and international specialists from the telecommunications ecosystem, will analyze and discuss topics such as quality of service, broadband, universal access, digital inclusion, gender equality, infrastructure, connectivity, cybersecurity, digital economy, smart cities, and regulatory improvement.

These topics will also be used by special national guests who will attend this international event. More than 200 representatives from the public and private sectors of Central America (CA) and the European Union (EU) will meet this Thursday and Friday in Panama to promote concrete projects for investment, financing and business cooperation for the region within the framework of the Association Agreement between both blocs and the European Global Gateway Strategy.

The general administrator of ASEP, Zelmar Rodríguez, regarding the realization of this event, emphasized its importance, which confirms Panama’s position as an International Telecommunications Hub. The Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) is an entity of the Organization of American States, with technical autonomy, established by the General Assembly, in accordance with the Charter of this Organization. CITEL is led by its Executive Secretary Óscar León, and is committed to facilitating and promoting the continuous development of telecommunications/information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the hemisphere for sustainable development.
