The Church in Panama has been Requested for Mediation between Striking Teachers and the National Assembly

The new Board of Directors of the National Assembly met on July 3 with representatives of 23 teachers’ unions and indigenous communities, with the goal of advancing the search for a solution to the ongoing strike in the education sector.

On Monday, July 7, the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Herrera, requested the mediation of the Catholic Church and private sector to hold a discussion with teachers’ unions on the recent reform of the Social Security Fund (CSS) through Law 462.  The purpose of the discussion is for teachers’ unions to return to teaching in public schools and end the work stoppage declared on April 23. The goal is to reach an agreement before next Monday, July 14, to resume classes that day, according to Herrera.
