Venezuela Moves to Arrest Opposition Candidate Edmundo González

The attorney general’s office of the Nicolás Maduro regime requested and confirmed on Monday the arrest warrant of Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González, accusing him of forging public documents, conspiring against the government and promoting public disobedience, among other charges.  The U.S. and other nations have recognized Edmundo as the rightful winner of the country’s July elections, accusing Maduro of “crimes associated with terrorism.”  Gonzalez had ignored several summonses amid fears it would be used as an excuse to detain him.  His party, the Democratic Unitary Platform, which is part of the opposition coalition, has said he’s been persecuted since the elections and accused Maduro of using “state terrorism” to stay in power, with dozens of political prisoners detained.
