Panama and the US Had Talks Shortly After the Elections

The United States and Latin America along with Argentina, congratulated the newly elected Panama President, José Raúl Mulino and the US hopes to continue its alliance with Panama to stop the irregular migration through the Darién.  Mulino met this Monday, May 6, 2024 with Mari Carmen Aponte, United States ambassador to the country.  The meeting occurred one day after the general elections in Panama, in which the presidential candidate for the Realizing Goals and Alliance parties emerged victorious.  In his X social network account, Aponte mentioned that they talked about vital issues for both countries, such as irregular migration, bilateral trade, US investments in Panama and security.  Mulino was quoted as saying: “I will be guarantor of Panama’s good relations with the world.”  Mulino was born on 13 June 1959 in David, Chiriquí.  He is the son of the politician and governor of the province of Chiriquí José Mulino Rovira, and the businesswoman Nelly Quintero de Mulino. His brother is the diplomat José Javier Mulino.The new president of Panama was catapulted to power in March after Ricardo Martinelli’s disqualification.  José Raúl Mulino of Chiriquí Province is 64 years old and now the elected president of Panama with 34.26% of the vote.  Lombana got 24.64%, Martin Torrijos received 16.03%, Romulo Roux 11.36, Zulay Rodriguez 6.57%, Gaby 5.85%, Maribel 1.08%, and Meliton Arrocha with 0.21%.   Until just two months ago, Mulino was a lawyer and former minister of several portfolios who was running as vice-presidential candidate for Ricardo Martinelli, but the political disqualification of his popular mentor catapulted him to power after a rarefied campaign in which he insistently promised the return of the economic boom of a decade ago.  Mulino swears that he is nobody’s puppet.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P6Kv0eWebo
