A total of 263  people benefited  Friday from the day of ophthalmological surgeries performed at the Dr. Luis “Chicho” Fábrega Hospital in the province of Veraguas, by surgeons from the United States Southern Command in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Government National.

During this event, it was possible to positively impact the lives of 263 people, from the Ngäbe Bugle and Veraguas Comarca, who had been waiting for their surgery for more than two years. A total of 202 cataracts, 38 pterygium, and 23 combined surgeries were performed.

The patients were recruited at the Luis “Chicho” Fábrega Hospital, and underwent all the laboratory tests, previous studies, and specialized medical care, as explained by Saúl Jovane, medical director of the center.

This was the fifth conference held in this hospital facility between specialists from the Southern Command and Panama, thanks to a strategic alliance that benefits hundreds of Panamanians.

Miguel Coello, from the joint task force ‘Bravo’ of the Southern Command, pointed out that the event was a complete success, managing to perform more surgeries than had been planned.

“We are very satisfied, the objective of the mission was achieved and that fills us with joy. We hope to continue for many more years with these conferences and continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the United States and Panama.”
