8-year-old Panamanian dies in US Border Patrol custody

 

An eight-year-old girl, a Panamanian national, although of Honduran parents, died while in Border Patrol custody in Harlingen, Texas, reports Noticias Telemundo.

The death occurred a few days ago and, according to authorities, the minor experienced a medical emergency and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she passed away.

The Honduran consul in McAllen identified the minor as Anadith Reyes Álvarez, who was born in Panama and had crossed the border about nine days ago with her parents and her other siblings.

Her relatives said that the minor suffered from heart problems, but the authorities did not pay enough attention to her discomfort, for which they feel that it was negligence and ask that investigations be carried out to determine responsibilities.

It is the second death of minors in the hands of border authorities.

Harlingen is one of the border points where there are the highest number of arrests in recent weeks in Texas.

This weekend, at the southern border, the number of immigrants in patrol custody was still exceptionally high, more than 22,000, according to Telemundo
