Sputnik V vaccjne 91.6 effective

The Russian Sputnik V vaccine is 91.6% effective against Covid-19 in its symptomatic manifestations, according to an analysis of clinical trials published Tuesday by the medical journal The Lancet and validated by independent experts.

Thevaccine is already administered in Russia and in other countries, such as Argentina and Algeria.

“The development of the Sputnik V vaccine was criticized for its haste, the fact that it skipped stages, and for a lack of transparency. But the results provided are clear and the scientific principle of this vaccine was demonstrated ”, estimated two British experts, Professors Ian Jones and Polly Roy, in a comment published alongside the study.

This “means that a supplemental vaccine can join the fight to reduce the incidence of Covid-19,” according to the researchers.

These first verified results corroborate Russia’s initial claims, greeted with mistrust late last year by the international scientific community.

Sputnik V would thus be among the most effective vaccines, along with those of Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna (around 95%).

The publication “clearly shows that Sputnik V is the vaccine for humanity. It is one of the only three vaccines with an efficacy greater than 90% ”, which also has“ easy logistics since it can be kept between + 2 and +8 ºC ”, reacted Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, who participated in its development.

The results published in The Lancet come from the latest phase of clinical trials, Phase 3, which brought together nearly 20,000 participants.

As in these cases, the results were presented by the team that developed the vaccine and conducted the trials, before being submitted to other independent scientists.

They show that Sputnik V reduces the risk of developing Covid-19 symptoms by 91.6%.

On the other hand, based on about 2,000 cases of people over 60 years of age, the study judges that the vaccine seems effective also in this age group.

It also offers partial data suggesting that it protects very well against moderate and severe manifestations of the disease.

Sputnik V is a “viral vector” vaccine: it uses other viruses previously manipulated to make them harmless to the body and instead capable of fighting Covid.

It is the same technique used by the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine, whose efficacy is 60%, according to the EMA.

The latter uses a single chimpanzee adenovirus while the Russian uses two different human adenoviruses for each of the doses. According to its manufacturers, this could explain its better immune response.
