Rapist anthem moves from Latin America to Washington
The “street performance” “The rapist is you ” was staged on Sunday in Washington, DC where the claim against sexual violence was mixed with shouts about the situation in Chile or against “migra”, alluding to immigration authorities in the United States.
Convened by the Purple DC Movement, a large group of women – many accompanied by their partners, friends and family – gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in the Mall, to stage the choreography created by the Chilean collective LasTesis and that was featured last week on Panama’s Cinta Costera and has since circled the world
In English and Spanish, women with flags of their countries sang the stanzas and repeated “the rapist is you,” while holding banners with various messages.
“Until dignity is customary,” read one poster, while another warned: “50% of Latinas who suffer abuse never report it. It is not too late to speak.”
