Dominicans join “rapist is you” global phenomenon
Hundreds of women in the Dominican Republic gave a performance of “ is you” the rapist anthem in front of the Attorney General’s Office in protest against sexist violence, joining movements worldwide that have adopted the song and its choreography. It appeared on the Cinta Costera in Panama on Friday Dec. 6
Various feminist groups convened the gathering, which began as a street event in Valparaíso, Chile, at the initiative of the Las Theses collective and which has become a global phenomenon reproduced by women in dozens of countries.
“The rapist is you,” the women chant, who have their eyes covered with a black bandage, while reproducing the choreographed steps that have circled the world since it was first held on November 25 in the Chilean city on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Activist Evelyn Guerrero, of the Dominican Zero Discrimination collective said that mobilizing in front of the Attorney General’s Office “makes sense. Just here are the prosecutors who apprehend the aggressors and release them,” said Guerrero, who
said that in addition to the capital, interventions have been called in the courthouses of different provinces of the country.
Feminist Millizén Uribe said there is a lack of political will when it comes to combating this scourge,
A state of national emergency is decreed, when there is a drought. With more of 70 women killed (in recent weeks), we need another decree should be made” she said.
