Redford denounces '"dictadorial" Trumpl

The legendary American actor Robert Redford lashed out at  the government of President Donald Trump on Tuesday, which he accused of “dictatorial type” actions in an open letter in which he urged his countrymen not to re-elect him.

“We are facing a crisis that I never thought I would see in my life: a dictatorial attack by President Donald Trump on everything that this country represents,” said the 83-year-old founder of the -old Sundance Film Festival in an opinion column published on the NBC News site.

Redford, who plays the president of the United States in the new HBO “Watchmen” series, warned that unless the Americans use their voting power during the next election to elect another president, the country is heading towards a disaster.

“We are at a time when I think we have a lot to lose, it is a critical and unforgiving moment,” he added. “This disguised monarchy has been so exhausting and chaotic that it is not surprising that so many citizens are disappointed.”

The Hollywood legend, who starred in classics such as the 1969 Western “Butch Cassidy” and the acclaimed film “All the President’s Men,” about the Watergate scandal, said that although he never liked Trump and did not vote for him, he was willing to “give it a try”.

But he said he was almost instantly disappointed.

“What is happening right now is so worrying that, instead of the United States of

America, we can now define ourselves as Divided States of America,” he said. “The leaders of both parties lack the fundamental courage to speak with the other side to benefit the American people.”

Redford also urged his countrymen to become more politically involved before the

elections.

“There are only 11 months left for the presidential elections, 11 months for our only real chance to straighten this ship and change the course of the disaster ahead.”

Robert De Niro, another big-screen legend, has also been very critical of Trump, describing his presidency as “how to live in an abusive home.”
