US Treasury imposes sanctions on Cuban State company
The Treasury Department announced on Tuesday, November 26, sanctions against the Pan American Corporation of Cuba stating that the state company was used to evade the fines imposed on Cubametales for its support of the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.
“Cuba has played a direct role in preventing Venezuela’s return to democracy,” said Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Department, Justin G. Muzinich.
The US authorities said that since Cubametales – the state-owned oil import and export company – was sanctioned lin July, the company has faced significant pressure, so it turned to the Pan American Corporation as an intermediary.
“The Treasury continues to persecute the evaders of sanctions to deny resources to the illegitimate regime of Venezuela,” said a Department statement,
Although the United States and more than 50 countries consider Juan Guaidó, the opposition leader and parliamentary chief, as interim president, Maduro remains in power with the support of the military and seconded by Cuban agents, according to reports by US officials.
