Vendors protest market closing
The wrecking cranes are moving in but a group of longtime vendors from the Central Agricultural Market next to the Electoral Tribunal is refusing to move following the government ordered shut down on December 31 after safety reports from the Fire Service and Sinaproc.
On Wednesday, January 2, a group of vendors remained outside the premises, in open opposition to the measure which will move them to Merca Panama on Ave Centenario where wholesalers and some vendors are already installed.
The site remains closed and there and wrecking crews are on the perimeter to proceed with the demolition. The site belongs to the Electoral Tribunal which wants the space for parking and for a station for Metro Line 1.
The group rejects the move and argues that more accessible peripheral markets must be built.
