OPINION: WYD vs delayed priorities
Since 2017, the amount allocated in items for the celebration of World Youth Day (WYD) has reached $61.8 million of public funds. Although most Panamanians profess the Catholic religion, and WYD is an event that enhances the country, it is always important that pencils are sharpened in terms of public spending and that needs are prioritized. While some of the funds financed works that will remain after the WYD, such as the Chitré Convention Center or the early authorization of Line 2 of the Panama Metro, other investments may well have been used for other purposes. The benefits that WYD can bring to the country in terms of image, tourism, or the simple cleanliness and decoration of the capital city, reach the entire population. However, the multi-millions earmarked for the activity could also serve delayed priorities in the country. Panamanians must commit to WYD being a success, but we need the Government’s commitment that expenses are necessary for the common good.-LA PRENSA, Dec 21
