Red flag for architects after parking lot deaths

After the deaths of three people in a car that hurtled from a Costa del Este parking lot on Wednesday, March 28, Panama’s Society of Engineers and Architects (SPIA) says that architects will have to rethink how high rise parking lots are constructed.

Gustavo Bernal president of the Society of Engineers said the parking lots need to have steel or cement divisions and in necessary painted barriers to avoid a repeat of the accident.

He said that in the images that have been observed, show that the car was moving at a high speed and there are no traces that it tried to stop, but investigations have to be completed.

He said it will have to be seen if it necessary to regulate the cladding that covers the parking lots of buildings as has already happened in other countries such as Great Britain, where a disastrous fire occurred last year.
