OPINION: Corruption cloud over Varela government
The battle against corruption in Panama is unprecedented. However, we are
immersed in a sea of doubt, uncertainty and distrust. Some do not believe in good
intentions or in the honesty of anyone; others would like to be optimistic, but they fear that
investigations will not come to anything; and they are convinced that justice is selective, that
it persecutes those of the past government, while it protects those of the present.. President Juan Carlos Varela must be the most interested in changing this perception, but little has been done to achieve it. Allegedly, millions of dollars came to his party, and although they have not been sent to Andorra, come from the foundation of a lobbyist who received funds from the black box of a corrupt and convicted contractor. To expect that the country turns the page or gives it the benefit of the doubt without receiving a coherent explanation from the president is not just an act of disingenuousness, but a great disrespect … La Prensa, Nov. 29
