20 road blocking truck drivers arrested
AT LEAST 20 heavy-duty truck drivers were arrested on Wednesday morning, October 25 in the province of Colón.
They had made a caravan on the Panama-Colon highway to support The 24- hours (extendable) strike called, by the National Chamber of Transport (Canatra).
Anti-riot agents of the National Police moved in and Benjamín Sambrano, head of the Colon Police Zone, said that no road closures would be allowed.
Meanwhile, hundreds of workers were unable to get to their offices or employment centers in the capital city as privately owned bus services from east and west were canceled and threats against Metro buses appeared on social media.
The State Department of Communication said that the Canatra strike was “unjustified and only seeks to affect the users”.
The Government recalled that article 9 of Law 42 of October 2007, which regulates passenger transportation and, establishes as a cause of cancellation of the certificate of operation the total or partial suspension of the service without justifiable cause.
