Panamanian deportee dies in US prison
A 27-YEAR-OLD Panamanian awaiting deportation in a Southern Georgia, USA, prison became the seventh person to die this year in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Jean Jimenez Joseph, reportedly committed suicide. He was found unconscious with a blanket around his neck early Monday morning in his cell at the detention center in Lumpkin, said officials.
Attempts to resuscitate him failed. He was pronounced dead at Americus Hospital at 2:15 a.m.
The preliminary cause of death was determined as “self-inflicted strangulation,” ICE said.
Jimenez was found guilty on Jan. 5 in North Carolina of stealing a vehicle.
He was delivered to ICE on March 2 and the deportation process began.
