OPINION: Panama’s Odebrecht tail dragging
ODEBRECHT’S actions in other countries are a measure of what could happen if our authorities do not act with determination.
For example, in Ecuador the company refuses to cooperate in investigations, if it is penalized with fines and obliged to compensate for the damages caused by its conduct.
Meanwhile in Colombia and Peru they continue to unravel the network of corruption and implicate high profile characters.
In Panama the State’s strategy to recover the money lost in bribes and overcharges and the effort to dismantle the business structure that served to launder and hide the movement of millions of dollars, which are now part of our public debt, strangling the country is not very clear.
There are still too many loose ends in the statements of the Comptroller General and the executive branch.
The silence of the authorities fuels helplessness and suspicion.
It almost seems as if they do not want the whole truth to be known, and that the main culprits avoid justice…. Hoyporhoy, La Prensa, Mar. 25
