OPINION: The contagion of drug trafficking

THE PENETRATION levels achieved  by drug trafficking in Panama are really worrying, not only because of the violence it generates, but because this is a disease that is contagious.

We have already witnessed how organized crime got into the bowels of justice and local politics. Facts like these  are really the greatest danger we face as a nation.

The country needs well-structured political action to avoid being a forced backyard of foreign mafias or the route of the criminal groups trafficking drugs through our territory, including our coasts, seas and airspace.

Hence the initiative of the presidents of Panama and Colombia to make a linked  border security of both countries is positive news, undoubtedly, cutting routes and fighting drug trafficking, violence decrease, gangs will be an activity without greater profit and the country will be, generally safer for all citizens.
