Politicians linked to drug trafficking – Varela
CLAIMS BY President Juan Carlos Varela that there are politicians and lawyers involved with drug trafficking has raised the ire of opposition deputies and the National Bar Association.
Varela said On Tuesday October 11 that there is “information”and that it will be passed to authorities of those parties so that they are aware of the situation.
The statements of the president came in Veraguas during the delivery of the order to proceed in the construction of a $7.3 million secondary school in Atalaya
Varela also said that criminal gangs in places such as Colón have “political friends.”
He said that these politicians will be prosecuted.
Benicio Robinson, president of the PRD, said that the president should not be making such allegations and should leave the investigation of crimes to the police.
“If Mr. Varela handles information from people linked to political parties, that information should be put in the hands of the appropriate authorities,” he said.
CD official Rogelio Baruco said that Varela shouldn’t seek to make a political issue out of crime.
National Bar Association President Jose Alberto Alvarez said the statements by the president that claimed lawyers were involved in criminal activity were “insulting.”
He said that lawyers are simply doing their jobs in defending their clients.
